Auditing Large Spreadsheet Programs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Spreadsheets are an important device for computer based decision support. In this capacity, they might reach a level of complexity and show evolutionary patterns similar to conventional software. However, as end-user devices, they are not subjected to as rigorous a development and maintenance process as professionally written software. Thus, the significance of the decisions they are supporting and their correctness become increasingly divergent. The properties contributing to the success of small scale sheets tend to become a burden with larger sheets. This paper presents an approach that enables auditors to understand the structure of large spreadsheets by aggregating cells with related properties. It will be shown, how different auditing strategies can be supported by this approach.

A Toolkit for Scalable Spreadsheet Visualization
This paper presents a toolkit for spreadsheet visualization based on logical areas, semantic classes and data modules. Logical areas, semantic classes and data modules are abstract representations of spreadsheet programs that are meant to reduce the auditing and comprehension effort, especially for large and regular spreadsheets. The toolkit is integrated as a plug-in in the Gnumeric spreadshee...
متن کاملA Spreadsheet Auditing Tool Evaluated in an Industrial Context
Amongst the large number of write-and-throw-away-spreadsheets developed for one-time use there is a rather neglected proportion of spreadsheets that are huge, periodically used, and submitted to regular update-cycles like any conventionally evolving valuable legacy application software. However, due to the very nature of spreadsheets, their evolution is particularly tricky and therefore error-p...
متن کاملSpreadsheet Auditing Software
It is now widely accepted that errors in spreadsheets are both common and potentially dangerous. Further research has taken place to investigate how frequently these errors occur, what impact they have, how the risk of spreadsheet errors can be reduced by following spreadsheet design guidelines and methodologies, and how effective auditing of a spreadsheet is in the detection of these errors. H...
متن کاملSpreadsheet Assurance by "Control Around" is a Viable Alternative to the Traditional Approach
The traditional approach to spreadsheet auditing generally consists of auditing every distinct formula within a spreadsheet. Although tools are developed to support auditors during this process, the approach is still very time consuming and therefore relatively expensive. As an alternative to the traditional 'control through' approach, this paper discusses a 'control around' approach. Within th...
متن کاملDevelopment and Experimentation of a Software Tool for Identifying High Risk Spreadsheets for Auditing
Heavy use of spreadsheets by organisations bears many potential risks such as errors, ambiguity, data loss, duplication, and fraud. In this paper these risks are briefly outlined along with their available mitigation methods such as: documentation, centralisation, auditing, and user training. However, because of the large quantities of spreadsheets used in organisations, applying these methods ...
